1. LAST COUNTRY TO INTRODUCE TELVISION

In a push to modernize, the King of Bhutan finally allowed television and internet access into the country in 1999. Bhutan was among the last countries in the world to adopt television.

 



2.IT HAS THE HIGHEST UNCLIMED MOUNTAIN IN THE WORLD.

Bhutan is home to the world's highest mountain that has never been climbed. Lying on the border with China, Gangkhar Puensum has an elevation of 24,836 feet / 7,570 meters and is the 40th tallest peak in the world.

    The first plastic bags ban was established in 1999. However, it failed due to lack of alternatives even after enforcing it again twice in 2005 and 2009. Now, due to the urgent need for managing waste in Bhutan, it has been introduced in 2019. Awareness about alternatives like homemade carry bags, jute bags and hand woven bags is being spread to sensitize the citizens.

    Thimpu is one of just two capital cities in Asia that does not have a single traffic light. (The other is Pyongyang, North Korea.) There was such public outcry when local officials installed a single signal that it was quickly removed, and a traffic officer was re-assigned to the intersection.

    Bhutan is not only one of the happiest countries in the world, but also one of the greenest. Over 70% of the country is covered by forest. The constitution requires that at least 60% of the land remain forested for future generations. While lots of other countries are working hard to cut down carbon emissions, Bhutan is already carbon neutral and even carbon negative. To achieve enlightenment, monks and nuns will stay in one location, such as a meditation cave, for three days, three months, and three years.
